Religious Education

Intent

At Oak View, our Religious Education curriculum, based on the Discovery RE scheme, aims to deliver high-quality, enquiry-based learning that develops religious and theological literacy. We prepare pupils to engage thoughtfully in an increasingly diverse society, encouraging them to explore different beliefs and worldviews with respect and understanding.

RE is not about promoting specific religious views but about helping pupils build a shared human understanding, develop personal identity, and evaluate a range of perspectives. Through sacred texts and sources of wisdom, pupils explore how beliefs shape identity, values, and community life.

We also foster critical thinking and personal reflection, enabling pupils to respond to moral, philosophical, and ethical questions with increasing depth and empathy.

Impact

By the end of each key stage, pupils will:

  • Demonstrate understanding of key beliefs, practices, and sacred texts.

  • Recognise and appreciate diversity within and between religions.

  • Engage critically with ultimate questions and ethical issues.

  • Show growing ability to reflect personally and communicate their ideas respectfully.

  • Develop skills to participate thoughtfully and compassionately in a multi-faith society.

Our RE curriculum nurtures well-informed, reflective, and respectful individuals equipped for life in a diverse world.

Implementation

RE is taught through the Discovery RE scheme, using a structured, enquiry-based approach. Each unit begins with a key question to promote reflection and investigation.

Lessons follow four clear steps:

  • Engage: Stimulate curiosity and connect learning to personal experience.

  • Enquire: Explore beliefs, practices, and sources of wisdom.

  • Evaluate: Analyse different viewpoints and reflect critically.

  • Express: Share personal insights through discussion or creative expression.

Throughout their school journey, pupils study a variety of religious and non-religious worldviews, examining sacred texts, diversity within traditions, and how beliefs impact daily life. RE is inclusive, dialogic, and supports SMSC and British values.
