Modern Foreign Languages

Intent

Our intent is to deliver high-quality teaching of Spanish that provides children with the foundations for learning languages. We aim to:

- Offer a relevant and ambitious Spanish curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils using a wide variety of themes.

- Cover the four key language learning skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing in an age-appropriate way across Key Stage Two.

- Enable pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning.

- Give all pupils the chance to develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable and stimulating.

- Develop children’s understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of cultural differences.

- Leave students feeling willing and able to continue studying languages beyond Key Stage Two

Impact

By the end of Key Stage 2, our children:

- Will be enthusiastic learners with positive attitudes towards learning new languages.

- Will have developed a love for languages which they can take on to their future learning.

- Will have studied a varied curriculum that develops the four key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.

- Will understand the importance of learning another language to enhance intercultural understanding.

- Will be excited and motivated to use their language skills in real-life scenarios away from the classroom.

Implementation

Spanish is taught through a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds on prior knowledge and skills. We:

- Ensure coverage and consistency through the use of the KAPOW scheme of work for Years 3-6. Children will cover one unit each week for alternating half terms.

- Plan lessons that are designed to be progressive and build on children’s prior knowledge as they move though Key Stage Two. Children will ideally progress from word to sentence level over the course of this time frame.

- Design lessons that are interactive and reflect real-life situations.

- Provide activities that are challenging and varied and develop listening, reading, speaking and writing skills for all learners.

- Encourage pupils to answer questions and express themselves in Spanish, both verbally and through written work.

- Deliver lessons that are taught mainly in Spanish, using native speaker videos and sound files to give pupils the chance to hear a variety of Spanish voices.
