Oak View Primary and Nursery School Vision

We commit to making oracy a central pillar of our school life: as essential as reading, writing and maths. Through oracy we aim to nurture confident, articulate, empathetic learners who are prepared for school, community and the wider world.

‘Oracy education’ means learning to speak, listen and communicate, and also to learn through speaking, listening and communicating. These skills are important for many reasons. They help improve school outcomes, including reading, writing and maths. Oracy can also boost confidence and help young people find and succeed in work. A focus on oracy has been shown to support young people’s social and emotional development, build confidence and foster a sense of belonging at school.

Voice 21 works with over 1100 schools across the country. In Voice 21 Oracy Schools, you will hear students solving problems collaboratively in maths and dissecting arguments in history, talking through conflicts in the playground and leading assemblies. We will be working with their expert team to develop a high-quality oracy education across our school life, including our culture, curriculum, and teaching and learning.

To support high-quality classroom talk, we utilise the Oracy Framework and Talk Tactics provided below. These tools empower our pupils to move beyond simple answers, helping them to summarise, challenge and build upon ideas during discussions.
