Art
Intent
At Oak View, we intend for our Art and Design curriculum to inspire creativity, curiosity, and confidence in all pupils. We aim to provide a rich and engaging art education that: Develops knowledge of artists, techniques, and materials from different cultures and time periods.
- Encourages pupils to experiment, take risks, and express themselves visually.
- Equips children with the skills to draw, paint, sculpt, and explore mixed media confidently.
- Teaches children to observe, reflect, and evaluate their own and others’ work using appropriate vocabulary.
- Nurtures a lifelong appreciation of the visual arts, valuing individual voice and artistic diversity.
Implementation
Art is taught as a discrete subject and, where appropriate, through cross-curricular links(e.g., history, science, PSHE). Our approach includes:
- A clear progression of skills and knowledge from EYFS to Year 6, covering drawing, painting, printing, collage, 3D work, and digital media.
- Regular opportunities to study and be inspired by diverse artists (e.g. Matisse,Kandinsky)
- Emphasis on practical exploration, including mark making, colour mixing, and use ofvaried tools and materials.
- Use of sketchbooks to record ideas, develop skills, and reflect on progress over time.
- Displays, parent exhibitions, and collaborative projects to celebrate children's creativity and achievements in art.
Impact
Our children leave each key stage with:
- A solid foundation of artistic skills and techniques appropriate to their age and ability.
- The confidence to communicate visually and take creative risks.
- A growing understanding of how art reflects and shapes our world, both historicallyand culturally.
- An ability to critically evaluate their own and others’ work using age-appropriatevocabulary.
- A positive attitude toward creativity and increased self-expression through the arts.
We measure impact through ongoing teacher assessment, pupil voice, sketchbook monitoring, and final outcomes.
